Review of Nic's Beverly HillsUnlike the surrounding Beverly Hills establishments, there's no attitude here, just lots of retro-groovy slippery white leather; bold, colorful stripes; and laid-back locals noshing on cocktail cuisine while listening to good jazz bands and big-band trios. Owner Larry Nicola -- a really fun guy to hang out with, by the way -- takes pride in his self-anointed title as Vodkateur[tm], which means he's an expert regarding all things vodka. In fact, he built a walk-in freezer called a Vodbox just so he could have a proper tasting room so his guests can sample the best vodkas from around the world. Give Larry a call and ask him to give you the Vodbox experience when you arrive. I only wish that for a place with a Dean Martin shrine, the cocktails were less girly (a Peachy Keen Cosmo -- really?), though they do make a mean Moscow Mule, copper mug and all. Tip: Go for the happy hour, stay for the dinner menu, especially for small plates and appetizers that incorporate vodka, such as the steamed artichoke with miso and vodka, and the vodka-cured salmon served with pumpernickel crostini and caper-dill aioli (I dream about this dish). Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
