Review of Seven GrandAs mentioned in the Golden Gopher review, Cedd Moses made a name for himself by taking downtrodden, historic locations and turning them into cool bars with great design and fantastic cocktails. The neon sign lights up what was once a relatively dark block Downtown (before this bar brought people here), and after walking up a few flights of stairs, passing windows filled with mannequins as hunters and Maker's Mark bottles, you enter a low-lit whiskey mecca. Everything about Seven Grand is masculine -- animal heads on the walls, pool tables, a great jukebox -- save for the bartendresses in plaid miniskirts. This is one of the best and largest whiskey selections in L.A. -- more than 200 kinds of rye, Irish, bourbon, and Scotch, all served neat or on the rocks with special slow-melting cubes. Libations made with fresh-squeezed juices and homemade syrups are worthy, but note that this is not a new-style mixology bar; the emphasis is on classic cocktails. Things get a little more raucous when there's live music in the corner of the room. Tip: A small but comfortable patio offers a few booths for smokers. Please be sure to confirm all rates and details directly with the companies in question before planning your trip.

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
