Suggested Itineraries

The vast majority of travelers to Baja either park themselves in lively Los Cabos or experiences a brief border visit to the temptations of Tijuana. However, the peninsula offers much more, and it's easy to combine several of its attractive destinations into a single visit. Most of the suggested itineraries described combine some resort-style relaxation with explorations of the natural treasures of Baja, sampling some small-town Mexican life along the way. Note that it is now possible to enter through one airport and leave through another without having to pay extra in many cases. For explorations in northern Baja, you may choose to fly directly into Tijuana or to San Diego, crossing the border via one of the regular shuttle buses or in a car.

Unlike the rest of Mexico, Baja does not have regular bus service between the major towns. You'll either need to drive -- rental cars are widely available -- or participate in an organized tour with a chartered bus, though I personally wouldn't choose this option, as there's less flexibility to linger in places you're enjoying. In many areas, a four-wheel-drive vehicle, or one that sits higher up, such as an SUV, are the best bets -- it's still a rugged landscape here.

None of the itineraries can be called exhaustive explorations of Baja, but neither are they exhausting. Consider them as a sampler of the best of Baja, so that upon a return visit you'll know more about where you'd like to concentrate your time.

Spring Break Revisited: 3 Days in Cabo San Lucas -- For those who missed out on Spring Breaks of old, Cabo San Lucas is an eager hostess for partiers of any age. Book a long weekend at the ME Cabo resort on Médano Beach and the rest of your stay will unfold before you. The spring break schedule is simple: Sleep as late as you want, lounge by the Nikki Beach pool in the morning, lunch in the sun, sip fruity cocktails in the afternoon, then shower and get glam for the main event. Evenings start with a late dinner in San Lucas, drinks at a marina-front bar till 11pm, and dancing in a club till your stiletto-clad tootsies can't bear another step (flip-flops are welcome, too). Then back to the resort for low-key partying until first light or straight to bed to rest up for the next day.
