When to Go

High season on the Baja peninsula begins around December 20 and continues to Easter. In the South, winter is the best time for warm-but-not-hot weather; snorkeling and diving; and for visiting the missions, mountains, and historic sites that dot the interior of the peninsula. The Pacific side generally is a few degrees cooler year round and Sea of Cortez towns in mid-Baja can be warmer and cooler than their Southern Baja counterparts in summer and winter, respectively. Book well in advance if you plan to be in Los Cabos around the holidays or Spring Break and be prepared to pay premium rates close to Thanksgiving, Christmas, and the New Year.

Low season begins the day after Easter and continues to mid-December; during low season, prices may drop 20% to 50%.

The weather in Baja, land of extremes, can be unpredictable. Baja California's weather runs the gamut from cold to hot, windy to still, sunny to overcast, and dry to humid at any given moment in time. It can be sizzling hot in summer and cold and windy in winter -- so windy that fishing and other nautical expeditions may be grounded for a few days. And it can be completely different in the north of the peninsula than it is in the south. Although winter is often warm enough for wetsuit-free watersports -- especially in Los Cabos, south of the Tropic of Cancer -- bring a wetsuit if you're a serious diver or snorkeler, as well as warmer clothes for unexpectedly chilly weather at night. Because the sea is full of life, some of which can sting your skin, it's always a good idea to wear a full-body Lycra skin, no matter the temperature of the water.
