Hotel Thayer Review

Ensconced within the grounds of the West Point campus, this landmark hotel is the best bet for anyone who always wanted to attend the military academy. A fine, large old hotel (constructed in 1926), built in a similar style to the Gothic campus and named for General Thayer, the "father of the academy," it has decent-size rooms with large, firm beds. Although one side looks over the beautiful campus and the other over the Hudson River, light sleepers should know that the train rumbles by right below on the river side, both late at night and early in the morning. You'll miss the river views, but the campus side is much quieter. The medieval-style restaurant in the basement is the best restaurant in the immediate area; Sunday brunch is especially popular. Don't even bother trying to get a room during West Point graduation week: The hotel is booked 4 years in advance.

Facilities:
Restaurant; concierge; fitness center; limited room service

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
