The Inn at Water's Edge

Just a 10-minute drive north of Okemo Mountain, this 150-year-old house sits on the banks of the Black River, just off Route 100. It been thoroughly renovated and updated in a florid Victorian style as the innkeepers focus on making this a destination for romantic getaways. The attached barn has a lounge perfect for relaxing, with an oak pool table, chess set, leather couches, and a great mahogany bar that was actually imported from England. The guest rooms in the barn over the pub tend toward the cozy and dark. Room no. 11, upstairs in the main house, is a good choice -- it's bright and appealingly furnished, with corner windows and wood floors. The dining room serves four-course meals nightly and has an outdoor patio with lake views in good weather; the inn also goes out of its way to encourage outdoor exercise with free bikes, canoes, a swimming beach, and snowshoeing and cross-country ski trails.
