Grand Hotel Review

In 1899, every man, woman, and child who could walk, or so it is said, turned out for the opening of the châteaulike Grand. At last Lund had a fashionable hotel. The decades and world wars (fought without Sweden) have come and gone, and the Grand has changed and evolved over the years, but it has also kept its elegant architecture and remains the number-one choice of discerning visitors to Lund, including the most well-heeled parents of students enrolled at the university. In spite of its fashion and formality, the Grand is not "stiff and starched"; office workers will assemble here for a beer after a hard day's work, and it provides a welcoming setting for family feasts. The tone is set by the supremely elegant marble lobby, which basically justifies the hotel's name.

As befits the late 1890s, no room is like any other -- each has its own character, some spacious, others smaller. But each is comfortably furnished with a mix of modern and traditional. Overlooking the fountains and flowers of a city park, many patrons also come here to dine, even if they aren't staying at the hotel. The magnificent surroundings are somewhat enhanced by the Grand's traditional Scanian and Swedish menu and carefully crafted selection of international specialties. We are astonished by the wine list, which boasts 500 different vintages from some three dozen countries around the world. At the hotel's wine bar, you can sample these exclusive wines by either the glass or the bottle.

Facilities:
Restaurant; wine bar; fitness center; sauna; room service; laundry service; dry cleaning; nonsmoking rooms

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
