One of the most pleasant ways to view Maastricht and the riverbanks upstream and down is to take a cruise provided by Rederij Stiphout, Maaspromenade 27 (tel. 043/351-5300; www.stiphout.nl). April to October, generally daily from noon to 4pm on the hour (some days start and/or finish later), and in November and December on Saturday and Sunday at 2 and 4pm, a riverboat leaves the landing stage on Maasboulevard at the Sint-Servaas bridge for a 50-minute cruise past Sint-Pietersberg (you can leave the boat, tour the caves, and catch the next boat to continue the cruise) and on to the sluices at the Belgian border. The fare without the caves tour is 6.75€ ($11) for adults, 4€ ($6.40) for children ages 4 to 12, and free for children 3 and under. In addition, there are brunch trips, day trips to Liège, and a romantic "Candlelight Cruise" that includes dancing and dinner; call for schedules and fares. Note: Reservations are required for all except the basic cruise.

Rederij Stiphout also organizes landlubber tours by double-decker bus, departing from the Vrijthof July to September on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday.

At the VVV tourist office, pick up its City Walk and Fortifications Walk self-guided tour brochures. From March to November, the VVV conducts guided walking tours that depart from the VVV office and cost 4.40€ ($7.05) for adults, 3.40€ ($5.45) for children 12 and under. These include walks through the old city and among the fortifications.
