Frommer's Review
The 1842 Inn is reason enough to come to Macon. It's truly special and is one of our favorite inns south of the Mason-Dixon Line. This inn is romantic, upscale, and charming. You're likely to find a working fireplace in your room, along with antiques, expensive fabrics, four-poster beds, and maybe even a whirlpool. But what turns this place into something truly memorable is the lovely staff, who have been here for years and who epitomize warm-as-toast Southern hospitality. JoAnne Dillard's specially made mint juleps are fashioned from mint fresh from the kitchen garden and served in elegant silver julep cups, along with evening hors d'oeuvres, in one of the parlor rooms. The inn has no restaurant (look for on-site dining facilities in the near future), but travelers arriving late can arrange to have a meal from one of the local restaurants waiting for them in their room or on the candlelit patio. Across the courtyard is a 1900 Victorian cottage with equally elegant rooms. Come to Macon and add your name to the list of celebrities (including Dr. Ruth and Barbara Walters) who have stayed here. All rooms are nonsmoking.
