Frommer's Review
One of the newest -- and also one of the grandest -- hotels to open in Funchal is this pocket of posh created from a landmark manor house that stands on the brow of a hill opening onto panoramic vistas of the Atlantic, the mountains in the distance, and the city itself. The public areas of this government-rated five-star hotel are decorated so elegantly and warmly that they evoke a wealthy private home. The stylish interior opens onto well-tended gardens studded with fountains, a pavilion, a pond filled with swans, and even a 9-hole minigolf course. We'd stay here if for no other reason than to enjoy the fabulous terraces. You can walk to town in 20 minutes, or else take a 10-minute taxi ride. So, you're isolated but not that isolated.
A favorite of honeymooners, the quinta offers luxuriously furnished and spacious bedrooms, decorated in Portuguese marble and wooden furnishings, each with a state-of-the-art private bathroom with tub and shower. The finest of carpeting, woods, and fabrics were used to enhance the bedrooms, which open onto private view balconies.
One of the special features of the property is its south-facing pool complex: A heated indoor pool opens onto a passage that leads to an outdoor pool with a waterfall extending to a second heated outdoor pool and even an ice chamber -- talk about a good place to cool off. La Belle Terrasse, with tables placed out for a view, is among the finest hotel dining rooms on the island, serving both lunch and dinner in a romantic atmosphere.
