Frommer's Review
Set in beautiful botanical gardens, this luxury hotel lies in the Achada district of Funchal, one of the hills enveloping the city. A little over 1/2km (1 mile) from the center, its landscaped grounds open onto panoramic vistas of both the Atlantic and the mountains in the distance. The gardens alone are reason enough to stay here, containing 495 different species of plants on 2.5 hectares (5 acres) of landscaped beauty, including rare trees from Africa, China, Japan, and even a jacaranda from Argentina.
General Beresford, at the time of Britain's wars with France under Napoleon, commanded his country's forces on Madeira and selected this 1700s mansion as his private residence. Much of what he enjoyed remains to delight visitors today -- a library, antiques, a billiard room, and a breakfast area with a rare ceramic wall panel hand painted and glazed in the 1500s. The bedrooms, annexed to the 1750 manor house, are spacious and beautifully furnished, offering traditional comfort but modern amenities as well. Each comes with a private bathroom with tub and shower. The Beresford restaurant offers formal service and a refined Continental and Portuguese cuisine. Among the mango trees is a large semi-covered heated pool with a bistro, Jacuzzi, sauna, and steam bath.
