Frommer's Review
This is our favorite B&B on the island, a converted 1850 manor house lying midway between Monte and Funchal. Set in the midst of landscaped gardens and tropical fruit trees, the antique-filled house opens onto panoramic views of Funchal. Of all the accommodations on Madeira, this one comes closest to being a live-in museum. Staying here is like living in an old family home owned by Madeiran aristocrats of long ago.
The house is filled with art and artifacts, providing a warm, luxurious atmosphere. Of all the accommodations, we most prefer the Dona María bedroom, with an exquisite bedroom set of furniture, including not only the bed, but the dresser, commode, table, and chairs. Each unit comes with a private bathroom with tub or shower. Breakfast is offered on a family-style table built in 1854 of the preciously rare Madeira wood pau santo or holy wood. A shared veranda and reading room are on the second floor, and a living and dining room are downstairs. There is also a small veranda for sunset watching.
