It sounds like a pedestrian pub, but the Common Man is anything but. Housed in a century-old barn, the interior is soaring and dramatic. Chandeliers, floral carpeting on the walls (weird, but it works), and candles on the tables meld successfully and coax all but the most coldhearted of guests into a relaxed frame of mind. You'll be halfway through the meal before you notice there are no windows. The menu strives to be as ambitious and appealing as the decor, and sometimes succeeds. Starters such as sautéed rabbit livers in mustard sauce, beet goat-cheese salad, and handmade tagliatelle are followed by entrees that might range from grilled duck with molasses-mashed sweet potatoes and cherry glaze to lamb tenderloin, pan-seared scallops, or panko-crusted soft shell crabs.
