Frommer's Review
Built in the mid-1960s of logs and thatch, Castaway maintains its rustic, Fijian-style charm despite many improvements over the years. The central activities building, perched on a point with white beaches on either side, has a thatch-covered roof, and the ceilings of the bures are lined with genuine masi cloth. Although the guest bures sit relatively close together in a coconut grove, their roofs sweep low enough to provide some privacy. Located upstairs at the beachside watersports shack, the Sundowner Bar appropriately faces west toward the Great Sea Reef. Guests have wood-fired pizzas there or dine in the central building, usually at umbrella tables on a stone beachside patio. This is a very good family resort, with a nurse on duty and the staff providing a wide range of activities, from learning Fijian to sack races. Consequently, couples seeking a quiet romantic retreat should look elsewhere during school holiday periods. Australian restaurateur Geoff Shaw owns both this resort and the Outrigger on the Lagoon Fiji on the Coral Coast, and the two often have attractive joint packages including helicopter transfers between them.
