Frommer's Review

Manchester's large population of Asian immigrants considers Yang Sing their favorite restaurant as proven by the cacophony of languages spoken within its labyrinth of dining rooms. It's loud and spread out, but efficient with a fast turnover of tables and a large fan base that's partly due to its status as the largest and most visible Chinese restaurant in the region. The decor is inspired by colonial, 1930s-era Shanghai. Delicate dim sum dumplings are served in a blissful array of choices from a pair of oversize carts in the dining room's center. Menu items cover the gamut of the Cantonese repertoire. Flavorful examples include stir-fried scallop with seasonal greens; sizzling filet of chicken in black-currant-and-blackberry sauce; braised duckling with a spicy bean casserole; and finely chopped loin of pork, stir-fried with French beans and preserved Chinese olive leaves.

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
