The River Restaurant Review

This is the most stylish, sophisticated, and sought-after restaurant in Manchester and the region around it, a culinary landmark that's on virtually everybody's list of "important" dining spots. Set one floor above lobby level of the also-recommended hotel, it's decorated in a flawlessly simple kind of postmodern minimalism, wherein a mostly white background acts as a foil for prisms of multicolored light and the superb cuisine of chef Eyck Zimmer. Great efforts are taken within the oft-changing menu to incorporate such local ingredients as Lancaster and Cheshire cheeses, cream, lamb, chicken, berries, vegetables, and fruit. What emerges from the kitchens evokes the best of Britain, as interpreted by some very savvy Continent-trained chefs and staff. Begin a meal here with pressed crabmeat served with mango, cucumber, and coriander oil, or with oyster ravioli with leeks. Main courses might include roast cod in a curry-flavored crust; a fricassee of lobster and scallops with herb-flavored gnocchi; lamb poached in olive oil with a purée of white beans; or a filet of Cheshire beef with garlic, snails, and horseradish-flavored mashed potatoes. Desserts evoke nostalgia for anyone who's ever read Charles Dickens: Apple financier with clotted cream ice cream, or an English custard tart with prunes and pear.

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
