This is one of the best examples in Manchester of combining old architectural features with the new. Behind an Edwardian facade, a dramatic and strikingly modern design (some locals refer to it as "a kind of tarty, New York-inspired look") reigns, enough of a statement that pop stars visiting from London often make it a point to stay here. In the heart of the city, only a minute's walk from Piccadilly Station, individually designed and "modern-as-tomorrow" bedrooms wait. The accommodations are striking, outfitted as they are in red, black, and ivory. Expect great big beds and very contemporary bathrooms with power showers. Some of the staff define the place by what it's not: "It's not baroque, it's not froufrou, and it's definitely not a Marriott," observed one of them.
