This is what the British call a "gastro-pub" with rooms, meaning it offers an excellent cuisine in its restaurant and a guest room above should you tie on a bender -- or even if you don't. All the bedrooms have double or twin beds, are small to midsize, and are comfortably if rather simply furnished, each with a private bathroom. In the heart of the city, the Ox offers an atmosphere that is cozy and inviting. We've crashed here a few times and found it to be one of the best bargains in town.

We're also fond of its restaurant, offering both vegetarian and Pacific Rim seafood dishes. There is a daily choice of specials. Locals "pig out" on the mixed grill with pork and leek sausage, rump steak, lamb chop, black pudding, smoked bacon, lamb kidneys and liver, and fried mushroom and grilled tomatoes. An individual meat pie is also a daily special, with main courses costing from £9.95 to £15 ($20-$30). Even if you're not staying here, consider dropping in for a reasonably priced meal made with market-fresh ingredients.
