Edmond Buniet moved from France to French Polynesia in 1968, and since 1982 has lived on Motu Marakorako, an islet on the south side of the Manihi lagoon. Edmond dabbles in the pearl business and welcomes travelers to share his little get-away-from-it-all retreat. The simple accommodations are in plywood buildings standing in a proverbial coconut grove. One near the pebbly beach has two narrow units, in which there is just enough room to squeeze double beds. Other buildings away from the beach have larger units; one of these aimed at families has a double bed in one room, over-and-under bunk beds in another. They all have front porches and share toilets and cold-water showers. Edmond serves beer and wine, but bring your own spirits. The 30-minute speedboat ride from the airport can be wet if the trade winds are blowing.
