Shopping

Marblehead is a legendary (or notorious, if you're on a budget) shopping destination. Shops, boutiques, and galleries abound in Old Town and on Atlantic Avenue and the east end of Pleasant Street. Good stops include Arnould Gallery & Framery, 111 Washington St. (tel. 781/631-6366); Artists & Authors, 108 Washington St. (tel. 781/639-0400; www.artists-authors.com), which carries rare books and fine art; Cargo Unlimited, 118 Washington St. (tel. 781/631-1112; www.cargounlimited.com), for home furnishings and accessories; Mud Puddle Toys, 1 Pleasant St. (tel. 781/631-0814; www.mudpuddletoys.com); and Scribe Paper & Gift, 84 Washington St. (tel. 781/631-7274; www.scribepaper.com). One of my favorite stops is the St. Michael's Thrift Shop, behind the Episcopal church at 20 Pleasant St. (tel. 781/631-0657; www.stmichaels1714.org; no credit cards). The gift shop at the Marblehead Arts Association sells members' creations.
