Getting There

Siremar (Molo Sanità, Trapani; tel. 0923/24968; www.siremar.it) has several scheduled ferries and hydrofoils per day between Trapani and Marettimo (2 1/2 hr. by ferry/13€; 1 hr. by hydrofoil/18€). Siremar has a ticket office on Marettimo at Piazza Umberto 2 (tel. 0923/923144). Ustica Lines (Via Ammiraglio Staiti, Trapani Porto; tel. 0923/873813; www.usticalines.it) runs hydrofoils only from Trapani and Marsala. From Trapani, trip frequency, crossing times, and ticket prices are the same as Siremar's hydrofoils. From Marsala (Piazza Piemonte Lombardo; tel. 348/3579863), the hydrofoil to Marettimo takes 1 hour, 10 minutes and costs 18€. Ustica Lines has an office on Marettimo at Corso Umberto I, 15; tel. 0923/923361). Day-trippers from Favignana or Levanzo can take the hydrofoil to Marettimo (12€) for the 30- to 45-minute crossing.

Note: Build flexibility into your travel schedule since rough seas (most common Nov-Apr) interrupt hydrofoil and ferry service, cutting the island off for sometimes days at a time. Hydrofoils may be canceled if the sea is even slightly mosso (rough).

Getting Around

Hydrofoils and ferries arrive at the Scalo Nuovo (New Port) on the south side of the island's one village. Outside of the small pedestrian-friendly grid of Marettimo town (1 sq. km/ 2/3 sq. mile), there is exactly one paved road, which becomes a dirt road a few hundred meters outside the port area. There are no other inhabited areas, just stunning scenery, much of which is traversed by moderate-to-strenuous hiking paths, though a much better way to get around Marettimo is to join an island-circumnavigation tour offered by one of the boatmen at the port.

Visitor Information

The Associazione Culturale Marettimo, Via Campi 3 (tel. 0923/923000), sells maps and can arrange guided tours of the island by land or sea. It also houses the small Museo del Mare.
