Mariazell is a winter vacation center for the whole family. Here you'll find all the components of a modern winter-sports and recreation center: avalanche-controlled grounds for skiers of all skill levels, a cableway, a chairlift, numerous surface lifts, a natural toboggan run, a skating rink, a ski school, and a ski kindergarten.
Its high altitude and good, brisk climate also make this a favored summer vacation site. You can go walking on some 200km (125 miles) of footpaths or go mountaineering, swimming, rowing, sailing, windsurfing, canoeing, fishing, horseback riding, glider flying, and camping. You can also play tennis or golf.
For the area's most dramatic views, you can take the Seilbahn Mariazell-Bürgeralpe, Wienerstrasse 28 (tel. 03882/2555), to the Bürgeralpe at 1,270m (4,167 ft.). Leaving from the center of town, cable cars depart about every 20 minutes. They run in July and August daily from 8:30am to 5:30pm; in September daily from 8:30am to 5pm; in May, June, October, and November daily 9am to 5pm; in December daily from 8am to 4pm; and from January to April daily from 8am to 4pm. A round-trip costs 11€ ($18).
