Frommer's Review
Anika is Arabic for "elegant" and is an accurate description for this British-owned riad, which opened in 2005. Built on the site of an old parking lot, the building's odd shape makes full use of the available space and has a private entrance off one of the busiest pedestrian-only streets in the medina. Its location can't be beat, as it is only meters away from a taxi drop-off point and within short walking distance of many of the medina's sights and restaurants. Although you would assume there would be increased street noise, once you pass through the heavy wood door, the outside hustle and bustle quickly dissipates. Traditional design is nicely combined with modern trimmings throughout the riad (blessedly during winter this equates to consistently hot water). A large, open-top marble courtyard offers a large, bright salon -- air-conditioned in summer and fireplace heated during winter -- a small hammam with massage room, and a small pool that allows some level of privacy by being built into a covered niche in the wall.
The rooms all face inward and are of various sizes. All are well appointed, especially the sole suite, which has a sofa and its own fireplace. The emphasis on mood lighting in each room, especially the Riad room, can bother some guests who prefer more natural light, but at night you'll find it sets a romantic ambience throughout the riad. Breakfast is served on a narrow terrace on the first floor (grab a table early if the riad is full), and there's a large terrace on the roof with funky woven-grass chairs, big umbrellas, and a Moroccan-style tent with brightly colored low-lying lounges. Dinner is served on request, but since you are in the heart of the medina, there are plenty of choices nearby.
