Miner's Bay is by default the commercial center of the island, though in most locales this somewhat aimless collection of homes and businesses wouldn't really qualify as a village. It's this understated approach to life that provides Mayne Island with its substantial charm. Don't let the rural patina fool you: Some of the lodgings and restaurants are world-class, and even though organized activities are few, it's hard to be bored on such a lovely island.
Mayne doesn't boast the provincial parks and public lands that the other Gulf Islands do, though there are several beach access sites that provide opportunities for swimming in warm weather, and beachcombing during other times of the year. Bennett Bay, on the northeast coast, is the best swimming beach. Campbell Bay, just northwest, is another favorite pebble beach. Dinner Bay Park is lovely for a picnic.
On a sunny day, the grounds of the Georgina Point Lighthouse offer dramatic views. Located on the island's northern tip, this lighthouse juts into Active Pass and overlooks the southern shores of Galiano Island, less than a mile away.
Mayne Island is home to a number of artists; the widely available map of the island lists more than 20 studios that are open to visitors. The pottery of John Charowsky, 490 Fernhill Rd. (tel. 250/539-3488), is especially attractive.
