Frommer's Review
The Windsor is Australia's only surviving authentic "grand" hotel. It opened in 1883 (as "The Grand") and was restored to its original condition some years ago. This upper-crust establishment oozes sophistication and has hosted such notables as Lauren Bacall, Muhammad Ali, and Omar Sharif. It holds a special place in Australia's history as the setting for the drafting of the country's Constitution in 1898. In 2008, the Windsor began a A$45-million (US$40-million/£20-million) refurbishment that may continue into early 2009. The extensive face-lift will involve all guest rooms, the entrance and lobby, the creation of a new bar and lounge area, and reactivation of the hotel's heritage elevators. The work will be carried out in three stages, ensuring minimal disruption. And some things won't change. The renowned "high tea" will continue to be served each afternoon, as it has been for more than 100 years. The staff is friendly and efficient. Standard rooms are comfortable, with high ceilings and good-size bathrooms. Deluxe rooms are twice as big, and many have striking views of Parliament House and the Melbourne Cathedral. Rates may change after the refurbishment is completed.
