Top of the World -- A rough, but adequate, road runs from the site of ancient Messene to the summit of Mount Ithomi (800m/2,624 ft.). The views of the districts of Messene and Lakonia are spectacular. At Ithomi's summit are remains of a Temple of Zeus and the small medieval monastery of Voulkanos. The monks are long gone and visitors are few, so this is a place to feel that the view is yours and yours alone. At sunset, there are few more spectacular spots in Greece. The summit is presently unfenced, and there is no admission charge; this will no doubt change soon, so try to go now!
