Frommer's Review
Without a doubt, the Monument to the Heroes of Independence is the most noted of Mexico City's exceptional public sculptures and monuments. The "Angel" is both a landmark and homage to those who lost their lives fighting for independence. It's also a central stage -- along with the zócalo -- for many of Mexico City's celebrations and mass demonstrations. Set upon a tall marble shaft, the golden angel is an important and easily discerned guidepost for travelers. A creation of Antonio Rivas Mercado, the 7m-high (23-ft.), gold-plated bronze angel, cast in Florence, Italy, was completed in 1906 at a cost of $2.5 (£1.5) million. With its base of marble and Italian granite, the monument's total height is 45m (148 ft.). It was renovated in 2006.
