The Tides ReviewThis 10-story Art Deco masterpiece reminiscent of a gleaming ocean liner with porthole windows received a massive makeover by trendsetting designer Kelly Wearstler and is now a condo/hotel. Rooms have been newly washed in warm earth tones. Also, all rooms are at least twice the size of a typical South Beach hotel room and have a breathtaking panoramic view of the ocean. The penthouses on the 9th and 10th floors are situated at the highest point on Ocean Drive, allowing for a priceless panoramic view of the ocean, the skyline, and the beach. The hotel's restaurant, La Marea, is located in the lobby, and is good, but very pricey (although in the wake of the recession and thanks to a new chef, prices dropped about 30 percent, but we still say it's pricey). Located just off the lobby is the Coral Bar, a small and romantic spot for a cocktail or two with the help of its very own rum sommelier. A full selection of spa services is available in rooms and poolside. Best of all, the Tides has what they call "Pool Personal Assistants" who provide magazines, frozen fruits, and chilled water and will even clean and polish your sunglasses, and "Oceanfront Personal Assistants" who assist in scoring lounges, umbrellas, towels, and picnic baskets if you wish. | 3 stars | Frommer's Exceptional |
Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
