Loews Hotel ReviewThe Loews is one of the largest hotels on South Beach, consuming an unprecedented 900 feet of oceanfront. This 790-room behemoth is considered an eyesore by many, an architectural triumph by others. Rooms are a bit boxy and bland, nothing to rave about, but are clean and have new carpets and bedspreads to erase signs of wear and tear from the hotel's heavy traffic. The best rooms do not face very congested Collins Avenue, as rooms that do tend to be quite noisy. If you can steer your way past all the conventioneers in the lobby, you can escape to the equally massive pool (with an undisputedly gorgeous, landscaped entrance that's more Maui than Miami). In addition to children's fare, such as the Loews Loves Kids program, the hotel hosts fun activities for adults, such as Dive in Movies at the pool, salsa lessons, and bingo. In addition to a pretty good lobby sushi bar, Emeril Lagasse maintains his eponymous and iconic Emeril's restaurant here. For spa junkies, there's a sprawling Elemis Spa and Fitness Center. In 2009, the resort began a $50 million renovation which has whisked the resort from stale to stellar thanks to, among other things, the removal of the ghastly popcorn ceilings in all rooms, renovation of all bathrooms, the removal of the lobby's outdated pineapple-covered staircase in favor of a new retail area and wall-sized aquarium, and the addition of an old-fashioned ice cream parlor and water features along the hotel's driveway. | 3 stars | Frommer's Exceptional |
Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
