Whitelaw Hotel ReviewWith a slogan that reads "Clean sheets, hot water, and stiff drinks," the Whitelaw Hotel stands apart from other boutique hotels with its fierce sense of humor. Only half a block from Ocean Drive, this hotel, like its clientele, is full of distinct personalities, pairing such disparate elements as luxurious Belgian sheets with shag carpeting to create an innovative setting. All-white rooms manage to be homey and plush, and not at all antiseptic, with white wood floors, a much needed improvement from the old linoleum. Bathrooms are pretty small and not that well stocked, and towels are sometimes in short supply, but those who stay here aren't really looking for luxury -- they just want to party. Complimentary cocktails in the lobby every night from 7 to 8pm contribute to a very social atmosphere. In 2008, the owners of the Whitelaw opened a new stay, the Riviera (tel. 877/762-3477), tucked away at 2000 Liberty Ave., on South Beach, featuring imaginatively designed one-bedroom apartmentlike accommodations with full gourmet kitchens; a courtyard pool complete with an outdoor bar, grill, and private cabanas; a lobby lounge; a state-of-the-art spa and yoga room; and a sundeck with sweeping views of the city and ocean. Rates start at $215 in the winter and $145 off-season. Facilities: Note: This information was accurate when it was published, but can change without notice. | 3 stars | Frommer's Exceptional |
Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
