The Sagamore ReviewJust two doors down from the Delano Hotel is the Sagamore, fabulous in its own right, with an ultramodern lobby-cum-art-gallery-cum-restaurant that's infinitely warmer than your typical pop-art exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art. The hotel doesn't take itself too seriously and boasts a tongue-in-cheek sense of humor that was evidenced when it hosted a Lox and Botox party -- no, we're not kidding. Although the lobby and its requisite restaurant, bar, and lounge areas have become command central for the international chic elite and celebrities, the Sagamore's all-suite, apartmentlike rooms are havens from the hype, with all the cushy comforts of home and then some. The sprawling outdoor lawn, dotted with cabanas with plasma TVs screening everything from Japanese anime to digital art, pool, and beachfront makes you realize you're not in Kansas anymore. A branch of Miami's coiffeur to the stars, Rik Rak, opened in one of the outdoor bungalows. And in 2009, in order to avoid the unfortunate foreclosure the hotel was facing since losing money after its restaurant closed in 2008, word was that Sagamore was in talks with Hugh Hefner to turn the hotel into the only Playboy Club outside of Las Vegas -- one without gambling, but one with the trademark bunnies, Playboy-decorated rooms, a bunny hopping nightclub, and even, if he so wishes, Hefner's very own version of, uh, art, on the walls. | 3 stars | Frommer's Exceptional |
Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
