Frommer's Review
This Zen-like, Asian inspired hotel should have been built in the '80s, when people threw money around like Paris Hilton tosses fiancés. With rooms starting at upwards of $1,000 a night, dinner tabs coming in at around $200 per person, martinis at $26, and a celebrity clientele who doesn't have to ask how much because they can afford it, The Setai is truly for that 1% of society who can afford it. That aside, if you want to splurge, the place is stellar, stunning, and all those superlatives. All suites -- some of which are actually condos participating in the condo-hotel program, are gorgeous apartments with floor-to-ceiling windows, a full kitchen, and Jacuzzi bathtub bigger than a small swimming pool. There are 75 regular hotel rooms that are a minute 550 square feet compared to the suites' 1,300 to 3,500 square feet. All are adorned in sleek Asian decor with all the usuals -- plasma TV, comfy beds with real linen sheets, Lavazza espresso makers, Aqua di Parma bathroom amenities and even Maytag washer-dryers. The hotel's design, much like the rooms, are silently sleek, with lots of candlelight, sculptures, chocolate and honey tones, and stunning floral arrangements. The garden area with reflecting pools is lovely, but not as cool as the bach dune area with bar serving $26 burgers to clientele including U2's Bono. The Restaurant, it's proper name, is exquisite and authentically Asian with stainless steel tandoori ovens and a star chef hailing from Australia. But with prices like the ones they charge -- for small portions, no less -- you may as well buy a ticket on Quantas. It's probably the same price! One last thing: The Setai also bought one of our longtime favorite hotels, The Abbey -- to house all the staff they've imported from all over Asia!
