The outskirts of Middlebury, particularly Route 7 just south of the village green, are home to a handful of budget motels and inns. The 1960s-era Blue Spruce Motel, 2428 Rte. 7 S. (tel. 802/388-4091), has about two dozen basic rooms, plus some cottages; families lingering in the area for a few days should inquire about a suite with its own full kitchen, sleeping loft, and carport. Rates run from about $68 to $98 for the double rooms, $135 to $150 for the suite. The Greystone Motel, at 1395 Rte. 7 S. (tel. 802/388-4935), has 10 clean rooms with small bathrooms; rates for a double room can range from around $55 to $125, with winter being the least-expensive time.
