This old establishment has been brought thoroughly up-to-date, with a grandiose marble lobby and a handsome lounge and bar area with deep couches. Upstairs, the rooms are contemporary, but reflect the building's centuries-old heritage with their tall windows and high ceilings. Some are quirkily shaped, and a few singles are cramped, but the white tile floors and minimalist furnishings are starkly modern. The new bathrooms gleam and are equipped with stall showers and flat towels. Management can be as brusque and unsmiling as the decor. This is one of several similarly priced hotels on the block, a generally quiet street tucked away off Via Dante between the Duomo and La Scala in one direction and the Castello in the other.
