Frommer's Review
In a town where half the hotels use the name "Grand," this one should adopt the moniker "Monumental." The palatial lounges, the suites that have hosted celebrities from the king of Italy to Kevin Costner, the five-acre wooded grounds, and the frescoed restaurant that could host a UN conference: La Pace keeps early-20th-century formal elegance alive and very well cared for. It has been the place to stay in town since 1870. The guest rooms, many of them recently refurbished, are more subdued but still create a sense of comfort with shiny wood floors, high ceilings, and tasteful furnishings, including some new polished granite bathrooms. To keep up with the times, in a Belle Epoque resort whose modern relevance is always in question, the hotel regularly adds new spa facilities, such as a pool and hammam in 2007, and new treatments in its Centro Benessere (the Natural Health Center). "Truffle therapy" and "Chocotherapy" are just part of the menu. (Treatments applied externally -- for internal chocolate and truffle treatments, be sure to visit its grandiose restaurant.)
