Some things do get better with age, and that’s true of this pioneering ecolodge, which is run by Michael Kaye and Costa Rica Expeditions. Rooms are large and cozy, with hardwood floors, orthopedic beds, and a wall of windows or French doors with views of the gardens and forest. Meals are served in a large central dining room with walls of windows all around and a large, open fire burning under a suspended conical steel chimney. There are well-marked trails through the lush and beautiful gardens, and there’s a midsize heated outdoor pool with slate decking all around, as well as butterfly, orchid, and hummingbird attractions. These folks also operate one of the best guide and tour operations in the area.
