Frommer's Review
No obvious sign announces this restaurant, with its name only spelled out discreetly in white tiles in the sidewalk. There's no need to call attention to itself, since tout Montréal knows exactly where this most classic of Parisian-style bistros is. The food is fairly priced for such an eternally busy place, costing the same at noon as it does at midnight. The atmosphere hits all the notes, from checkered floor to high ceiling to mirrored walls. After a substantial starter like ham-and-cheese quiche, opt for one of the lighter main courses, such as the ravioli maison, which are round pasta pockets filled with a flavorful mixture of beef, pork, and veal. Or just stop by for a bowl of soupe de poisson or a simple croque-monsieur. L'Express serves satisfying, unpretentious food, and is open until 3am. Though reservations are usually necessary for tables, single diners can often find a seat at the zinc-topped bar, where full meals are also served. Service is usually spot-on, although unpleasantly long waits for food during brunch hours are not unheard of.
