Frommer's Review
The high standards set in recent years by several of the city's boutique hotels were exceeded as soon as this exemplar of the growing W chain opened in late 2004 on the edge of where downtown meets Vieux-Montréal. "Whatever, whenever" is the shorthand motto of the staff, meaning that they endeavor to swiftly satisfy any guest request, however unusual. Said employees, male and female, are young and distractingly attractive, as are many of the guests. If it weren't for the reception and concierge desks at each end, the lobby would suggest an exclusive dance club, what with the ice-blue and fire-engine-red glow of the wall panels and the 12-foot waterfall. The hotel restaurant, Otto, drew instant approval from local gourmands, and it attracts a sleek crowd favoring black and Armani. Three bars cater to lovers of the night, from the intimate W Café/Bartini featuring specialty martinis to the Wunderbar lounge with DJs. Bedrooms follow through, with pillow-top mattresses, goose-down comforters, and 350-count Egyptian cotton sheets. That flatscreen TVs, DVD players, and high-speed Internet access are standard even in the basic (called "Cozy") rooms is only to be expected.
