This 100-year-old temple, with origins stretching back almost 1,200 years when Kukai was said to have erected a stupa on this site, has nice grounds and is nestled in a wooded slope. For centuries it enjoyed support of the Shimazu clan of southern Kyushu. It's known for its excellent Buddhist cuisine, and the master priest will give zazen meditation lessons if his schedule permits. More than half the rooms have TVs and telephones; most also have nice sitting alcoves. There's always someone here who speaks a little English. Reservations should be made in advance, especially for peak season.
