Frommer's Review
The Caribbean's most exclusive hotel is as casually elegant and sophisticated as its clientele. The 18th-century main house is built of coral and stone, and it was painstakingly restored, reconstructed, and redecorated by Oliver Messel, uncle by marriage to Princess Margaret. The antique loggia, arched louvered doors, and cedar shutters set the style. The decor includes everything from Lady Bateman's steamer trunks to a scallop-shell fountain on a quartz base, where guests sit and enjoy their sundowners, perhaps after an afternoon on the tennis court or in the pool. Guests go between two beaches, each only a couple of minutes away on foot -- Endeavour Bay, on the leeward side, with calmer waters, and L'Ansecoy, on the other side.
Guest rooms are in five fully restored Georgian houses, a trio of cottages, a newer block of four rooms, and a five-room beach house, all of which open onto windswept balconies or patios. Extras include king-size beds dressed in Egyptian cotton and swathed in netted canopies, robes, slippers, and toiletries from Floris in London. Some of the more romantic units have wrought-iron four-posters, and some of the bathrooms offer private outdoor showers. The Tower Suite is one of the most luxurious of the accommodations, filling the entire second floor. The most expensive residence is Cotton Hill, a 2-bedroom villa with a private pool.
The hotel enjoys an outstanding reputation for its Caribbean/Continental food and service. Nonguests are welcome to dine here but must make reservations. The hotel also has three bars -- you might find Mick Jagger at one of them.
