Sonaisali Island Resort ReviewSonaisali Island Resort -- You drive through cane fields and ride a boat across a narrow muddy channel to this modern resort set on a flat, 42-hectare (105-acre) island. The lagoon is very shallow here at low tide, so imported sand held in place by a seawall serves as the main beach. You can also frolic in an attractive rock-lined pool with a swim-up bar. A large shingled roof covers all other common facilities, including an air-conditioned fine-dining restaurant. The tropically attired guest quarters include spacious hotel rooms, but the top choice are the airy duplex bungalows out in the lush gardens -- some of the largest bures on Viti Levu. Beachside bungalows have small Jacuzzi tubs on their front porches (these are duplex units, however, so don't expect the ultimate in privacy). Three of the units have two bedrooms each and are attractive to families. I wouldn't spend my entire vacation here (as many Australians and New Zealanders do), but this is a viable alternative to the Denarau Island resorts for a bayside stopover. Getting into Nadi Town for shopping requires a rental or taxi ride. P.O. Box 2544, Nadi (Sonaisali Island, 20 min. south of Nadi Town). tel. 670 6011. Fax 670 6092. www.sonaisali.com. 123 units. Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
