This chic, arty cafe is a good spot to have a quiet meal, or meet friends for late-night dessert and coffee. One menu is devoted to tapas, like almond-crusted baked brie with cranberry apple compote and West Coast fish cakes in creamy chipotle sauce, while another features "hand helds" or sandwiches. Main dishes feature local meats and vegetables -- the Veggie Stack, a tower of portobello mushrooms, mashed yams, tomatoes, and won tons, is a nice break from rich meat dishes. With contemporary art on the red brick walls, Modern Food's setting exudes a level of casual sophistication unusual for Nanaimo.
