It takes a moment to register and then you suddenly realize why the atmosphere at Lexington Bar and Books is at once decidedly strange and deeply familiar: people are smoking (!) and no one is turning them in to the police. That’s because Lexington Bar and Books is one of the few “cigar bars” in the city with a special license allowing cigar smoking—and cigarettes by extension. So if you’ve been longing for the days of a cocktail with a cig, here’s the place to come, though you’ll have to dress up: This is a highly patrician bar, with a crowd in their later 30s and 40s, and a dress code requiring jackets in winter and collared shirts year-round.
