Review of New Orleans ZephyrsMany maintain that there's no better entertainment value in pro sports than minor-league baseball, and an afternoon or evening at Zephyr Field out near the airport affirms that. Though the facility had some post-Katrina flooding and served as a staging area for rescue efforts, the Zephyrs stepped up to the plate on schedule for the 2006 season, accompanied by mascots Boudreaux D. and Clotile Nutria and their four kids. As that implied, family fun is foremost, with various promotions and fan-participation activities, plus a pool area behind right field (rentable for groups or parties), and a general-admission grass "levee" back of center field. Since moving from Denver in 1993, the team has served as the AAA team first for the Milwaukee Brewers, then the Houston Astros, and more recently the Washington Nationals. Among the stars-to-be that played here have been Bobby Abreu and Lance Berkman. (For baseball history buffs, the city has a strong minor-league legacy with the New Orleans Pelicans playing in various Mid-City locations 1887-1959.) It's a charming way to spend an evening -- plus the snacks are great! Note: This information was accurate when it was published, but can change without notice. Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
