Nestled in a converted 19th-century house at the Riverbend, Brigtsen's is warm, intimate, and romantic. The individual dining rooms are small and cozy, each sweetly painted with murals. and the menu changes daily. They aren't at the cutting edge of local cuisine, but there is plenty of regular interest. Generous portions make appetizers superfluous but their seasonal salads are so good and the BBQ shrimp with shrimp calas hard to pass up. Brigtsen has a special touch with rabbit: One of his most mouthwatering dishes is an appetizer of rabbit tenderloin on a tasso-Parmesan grits cake with sautéed spinach and a Creole mustard sauce. You can't miss with any of the soups, especially the lovely butternut squash shrimp bisque, and there's an entree to please everyone. A broiled Gulf fish with crabmeat Parmesan crust and béarnaise sauce is a great piece of seafood. Roast duck with dried cherry sauce is always reliable, with the skin of the duck done to a cracklin' just rightness. For the indecisive, a seafood platter offers samples of all sorts of fishy goodness, such as artichoke baked oyster or stuff piquillo pepper with shrimp and crabmeat con queso.
