Frommer's Review
Not exactly Mid-City -- it's on the outskirts of the Treme, on the way to Bayou St. John, so it serves both that neighborhood and the Quarter, which it's actually closer to -- this is a quintessential neighborhood restaurant, and understandably so; the owner grew up behind his family's legendary soul food/Creole restaurant. Locals line up here early, so try to time your visit for off hours, though you do run the risk of them running out of certain items by the time you arrive. This is your chance to try authentic regional cooking. Breakfast brings biscuits, waffles, crabmeat and shrimp omelets (among pretty much anything else you can whip up with eggs); grits; homemade hot sausages; and the very popular calves liver in brown gravy. Lunch brings some terrific fried chicken and more elaborate options like the trout baquet (the fish is topped with garlic butter sauce and sometimes fresh crabmeat), red beans 'n' rice, and even a T-bone steak. A friendly, lively (if sometimes justly harried) bunch works here, and the owner twinkles above it all. Note: Lil' Dizzy's opened a branch in the Wyndham Whitney Hotel in the CBD, where prices are a bit higher, but space is considerably greater. It may also be more conveniently located for you.
