Frommer's Review
Run for many years by Ray Cronk and Alvin Payne, this guesthouse is a little off the beaten path (just outside the French Quarter across N. Rampart St.), but it's painted a startling hot, Pepto-Bismol pink, so it's hard to miss. There are rooms in the old Creole main house (1848) and in what used to be the slave quarters. Roof damage flooded the top floor and rooms in the back, but all have been redone, mostly to fine, funky, and fun effect, all in a way that is classic NOLA guesthouse, in a manner that is being lost to generic good taste. Main-house rooms are dark colored, sometimes with gaudy new bathrooms, but sweet, and room no. 8 has an outrageous Art Nouveau bedroom suite. The slave quarters are simpler but with interesting antiques and light colors. All rooms are nonsmoking. Some rooms have exposed brick walls, while others open directly on to the courtyard, a veritable tropical garden with a banana tree, more green plants than you can count, some intricately carved old fountains, and a fluffy cat. There is a 24-hour desk clerk. Note that rates may change, so call for current ones.
