A former crumbling Queen Anne-style Victorian mansion on the corner of Washington (2 blocks from Lafayette cemetery and Commander's Palace with a streetcar stop right in front) is now a fine B&B. The location makes its porches and balconies a perfect place to spend Mardi Gras; parade viewing doesn't come any more comfortable or convenient. The stunning rooms are full of antiques (each has an impressive four-poster or wood canopy bed -- though a couple are small thanks to their vintage), with the slightly fussy details demanded by big Victorian rooms. Linens, pillows, and towels are ultraplush, and some bathrooms have big Jacuzzi tubs. The largest room -- our favorite -- overlooks the street corner (and has its own St. Charles-view balcony) and so is potentially noisy -- consider requesting one toward the back. A generous continental breakfast is served, and coffee, fruit, and such are always available. Friendly owner Bonnie is ready with suggestions on how to spend your time, though as in any B&B, do not expect 24-hour service.
