Frommer's Review
A fine preservation job has given what could have been an eyesore derelict (if historic) building a new useful function. Actually, this is two different buildings, one of which used to be -- get this! -- the St. James Infirmary, sung about so memorably by many a mournful jazz musician. Either that, or an old coffee and sugar company. (Whichever.) It's the latter that has inspired its new semi-Caribbean post-K redo. This gives the place a touch more style than the fresh -- white-bed generic look popping up all over town. Look for parrots, palm trees, and even monkey-shaped pull chains on the lamps. Because the restorers had to make do with a nonuniform space, rooms vary in size and style, and a few lack windows. You want high ceilings? Ask for a room in the back building. Rooms have either painted texture or, on the top floor, exposed brick and wood. All rooms have feather beds, soft towels, and marble bathrooms. Two suites and a room share a small, private brick courtyard with a fountain -- a nice setup for a small group. There is a teeny-weeny pool -- you might be forgiven for considering it really just a large puddle with nice tile.
