The Whitney--A Wyndham Historic Hotel

A clever and welcome use of space as a grand old bank building has been converted into a fine modern hotel. The unique results include gawk-worthy public spaces; be sure to look up at all the fanciful, wedding-cake-decoration old plasterwork (they don't make 'em like that anymore -- pity) and help us wonder how the heck safecrackers got past those thick slabs of doors. Best of all is the imposing lobby, full of stately pillars (doubtless the grandeur intimidated many a loan applicant of yesteryear), now part restaurant but also still part working bank -- it puts other swellegant establishments in town to shame.

Rooms are a little too stately to classify as true business efficient, but also a little too generic to make this a proper romantic getaway. The restaurant is currently a branch of local Creole/soul favorite Lil' Dizzy's. Overall, the Whitney has more character than your average upscale chain, so it ultimately gets a positive vote. And if you are a preservationist, you will probably like it a lot.
